St. George's Chapel is located in Calvaria de Cima, Porto de Mós, Portugal. It is near the São Jorge Military Camp, where the historic Battle of Aljubarrota took place in 1385.
Built by D. Nuno Álvares Pereira after the Battle of Aljubarrota to celebrate the decisive victory. Originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it was later dedicated to St. George.
Classified as a National Monument since 1910, the chapel is a remarkable example of religious architecture in the Late Gothic style.
It features a single rectangular nave and a quadrangular chancel. It has undergone interventions over the centuries, including a partial reconstruction by the Swiss architect Ernesto Korrodi in 1928.
It has undergone several conservation interventions, including a significant one in 2004 to preserve its original features.
Currently integrated into the Aljubarrota Battle Interpretation Center, it offers visitors the opportunity to explore not only the chapel but also to understand the historical context of the battle that surrounds it.
Open to the public, the chapel is a recommended destination for those interested in the medieval history of Portugal and the figure of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira.
Periodically, cultural events and activities are held at the chapel, providing visitors with a more immersive experience in local history.
