The Ceramics Museum is located in the city of Caldas da Rainha, in the area known as Avenal. Its position, in a historic part of the city, gives it a natural integration into the urban environment, allowing visitors to explore local culture in the heart of the city.
This museum is housed in the former Quinta Visconde de Sacavém, an architectural complex reflecting the revivalist style of the late 19th century. The palacete, of late Romantic inspiration, was built in the 1890s by José Joaquim Pinto da Silva, the second Viscount of Sacavém, a notable figure as a collector, ceramist, and patron of Caldas ceramic arts. The main building hosts the permanent exhibition, while annexed, renovated areas offer space for temporary exhibitions and a pottery workshop, providing insight into the creative process.
The museum's surroundings are marked by extensive gardens, designed with a romantic layout characteristic of the late 19th century. These spaces, with their avenues, flowerbeds, and planters, provide a pleasant environment for a stroll. One of the most distinctive aspects is the presence of rich ceramic decoration adorning the entire complex. One can observe the application of tiles ranging from the 16th to the 20th century, varied statuary, and architectural ceramic elements, such as dragon or boar-shaped gargoyles on the palacete's facades. This fusion of ceramic art with the landscape and architecture enhances the heritage and invites contemplation.
The collections of the Ceramics Museum offer a representative overview of ceramic production, from both Portuguese and international centers, from the 16th century to the present day. Prominently featured is the strong presence of local Caldas da Rainha production, ranging from traditional utilitarian forms to 19th-century art, with works by artists such as Manuel Mafra, who introduced Bernard Palissy's naturalistic style to the region. One of the highlights is the remarkable collection of pieces by Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, originating from the Caldas da Rainha Faience Factory. The collection also includes Art Nouveau examples by Costa Motta Sobrinho, tile panels from various origins and periods, and an interesting collection of miniatures, with works by Francisco Elias. The diversity of styles and periods present provides an in-depth understanding of the history and evolution of ceramics.
