In the center of the square, a peculiar tombstone can be seen, engraved with the identifying marks of several stonemasons. This marks the precise location where the old Church of Santa Maria-a-Velha once stood, a more modest and primitive temple that served as a support point and place of prayer for the early builders of the Monastery, in the early stages of its construction.
