D. Afonso V Cloister is located in the heart of the village of Batalha, in the municipality of the same name, as an integral part of the historic Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória. Its position is central within the monastic complex, situated near the most frequented areas of the monument, between Largo do Mosteiro and Largo do Infante Dom Henrique.
This cloister dates back to the second half of the 15th century, with its construction taking place between 1448 and 1477, under the direction of masters such as Martim Vasques and Fernão de Évora. It was an initiative of King D. Afonso V, who, with this addition, introduced an important architectural innovation in Portugal: the design of a two-story cloister. Its structure, therefore, stands out as a pioneering example for its time, reflecting the evolution of construction techniques and architectural thought.
The architecture of D. Afonso V Cloister exhibits a more austere style, in line with the ideals of the mendicant orders that resided there. On the lower floor, pairs of arched windows are visible, separated by robust buttresses, with double pointed arches resting on faceted columns. The keystones of the vaults on this floor reveal heraldic details, such as the royal shields of D. Afonso V and D. Duarte, a visible testament to its connection with the Portuguese royalty.
The upper floor is distinguished by a colonnade that supports the roof, once made of stone, and now finished with tiles and wood on its interior. This cloister was designed to house various monastic dependencies essential to the daily life of the Dominican friars. On the ground floor, spaces such as the kitchen, pantry, and workshops operated, while the upper floor housed the dormitories, infirmary, and the monastery's library, demonstrating its functionality and importance in community life.
As one walks through its galleries, it is possible to appreciate the elegant simplicity of its lines and the solidity of its vaults. A recent conservation and restoration intervention has allowed this cloister to regain a renewed splendor, highlighting its facades and the intrinsic beauty of its galleries. Despite its modesty, D. Afonso V Cloister offers an atmosphere of serenity and contemplation, inviting a pause and the discovery of the details that tell its long history.
