The António Duarte Atelier-Museum is located in the Avenal area, a central point in the city of Caldas da Rainha. It is part of the complex of spaces that form the Arts Centre, situated next to D. Carlos I Park, a landmark green area in the locality.
Being integrated into the Arts Centre gives it a particular cultural context, sharing the building with other initiatives related to visual arts.
This museum is dedicated to the life and work of António Duarte (1912-1998), a sculptor born in Caldas da Rainha. The creation of this space is due to his own donation of a vast collection of works to his hometown, fulfilling his desire to have a place to display his artistic production.
António Duarte envisioned this museum not only as an exhibition space but also as an atelier dedicated to the teaching and practice of sculpture, an objective reflected in the building's original design.
The Atelier-Museum's collection comprises over a thousand pieces, offering a comprehensive view of António Duarte's artistic journey. It is possible to appreciate a large part of his sculptural production, from sketches and maquettes that gave rise to well-known public works, to more personal and intimate pieces.
In addition to sculpture, the collection includes painting, drawings, and a remarkable core of sacred art, which reveals the artist's interest in this domain and his perspective as a collector. It is an opportunity to discover the diversity of expressions of the master from Caldas.
The building housing the museum was designed to optimize the presentation of the works. The exhibition areas, distributed across different rooms, allow for appreciating the works from various perspectives. The main exhibition space is a generously sized room, where natural light, coming from the windows, plays an important role in how the pieces are perceived.
Over time, the building has undergone expansions to better accommodate the collection and the museum's different facets, including the Free Creation Room, designed for artistic practice, and the area dedicated to Public Sculpture and temporary exhibitions.
