The Armazém das Artes is located in Alcobaça, in an urban area that combines the serenity of a city with historical roots with a discreet contemporary rhythm. The building integrates into a calm urban fabric, where the simplicity of the surroundings enhances the contrast with the interior designed for the enjoyment of art.
From the interior, it is possible to perceive an articulation between different levels and volumes, creating visual paths that invite slow exploration. The presence of natural light and ample spaces allows the artworks to breathe and relate to the visitor without external visual noise.
The Armazém das Artes was born from an initiative linked to the valorization of contemporary creation in Portugal, playing a relevant role in the dissemination of national artists. The figure of José Aurélio, a sculptor recognized in the Portuguese art scene, was decisive in the genesis of the space, imprinting it with a sensitive orientation towards sculpture and the careful presentation of pieces.
Over time, the space has consolidated itself as a meeting point between creators, curators, and the public, hosting temporary exhibitions with curatorial approaches that seek to establish dialogues between forms, materials, and ideas. This evolution has been marked by a recovery of functionality and programmatic consistency, after periods of lower activity.
The interior of the Armazém das Artes is characterized by large white volumes, landings, and level changes that create fluid paths and discovery zones. The interior geometry, with cutouts, ramps, and balconies, gives the space the sensation of an inverted cavern: a sequence of clear spaces where depth is progressively revealed.
The neutral surfaces and the continuous floor serve as a backdrop for the artworks, without competing with them, allowing sculptures and installations to stand out through their form, texture, and presence. The distribution across several levels offers distinct perspectives, both from the visitor's point of view and in the interaction between the exhibited pieces.
The exhibitions presented favor Portuguese contemporary art, with a clear focus on sculpture and proposals that explore the relationship between matter and space. There are works that combine vertical structures of strong visual impact with more organic pieces, creating contrasts and tensions that stimulate attentive observation.
The programming includes temporary exhibitions that change throughout the year, allowing for the viewing of new and experimental projects, often complemented by curatorial approaches with diverse profiles. Visitors will find a selection of works that dialogue with each other and with the space, offering multiple layers of aesthetic and conceptual interpretation.
