Armazém das Artes is located in the heart of Alcobaça, nestled in its historic zone. Its central position within the urban area of Alcobaça and Vestiaria grants it a natural integration into the urban fabric, making it an accessible point of interest in the municipality of Alcobaça.
This cultural space was born from the vision of sculptor José Aurélio, who, in 1995, began the transformation of an old building. The remaining structures of ancient wineries, which had served as wine warehouses between the 1940s and 1970s, were adapted to embrace a new life. In 2007, Armazém das Artes was inaugurated as an independent, non-profit cultural foundation dedicated to the promotion of the arts.
Armazém das Artes distinguishes itself through its architecture, which gives the building itself the characteristics of a sculptural piece. Developing across several floors, totaling approximately 2000 m², the space is marked by the fluidity between its different areas and the abundant natural light that fills it. The entrance door, cast in bronze, features symbolic images representing painting, sculpture, music, theatre, cinema, architecture, and alchemy, reflecting the diversity of artistic expressions the venue hosts.
Dedicated to promoting art and culture, Armazém das Artes functions as a versatile and dynamic center. Its main focus lies in plastic arts, with particular attention to contemporary art and sculpture, in harmony with the work of its founder. The space offers a stage for various cultural activities, from exhibitions, which constitute its central axis, to concerts, creative workshops, and debates. It contributes to the sharing of knowledge and to bringing the arts closer to the community, seeking to stimulate critical and innovative thinking. Armazém das Artes also possesses its own collection of contemporary Portuguese art, which is currently undergoing valuation and cataloging.
