The Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, originally built in the 13th century, exhibits elements of Romanesque architecture. It was the old Parish Church of the locality.
Built in traditional granite from the region, standing out for its resistance and natural beauty.
Currently, only the chancel and the triumphal arch remain standing, as the nave and the porch were demolished in 1923 for the construction of the cemetery.
The church is in ruins, without a roof, the result of a fire that occurred in 1922.
- Triumphal Arch: Still preserved, it is a typical example of Romanesque architecture.
- Cornice and Corbel: The cornice is decorated with half spheres and the corbel presents geometric motifs and figures of animals.
This building was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1996, recognizing its historical and cultural importance.
It is located in Vilar Maior, in the union of parishes of Aldeia da Ribeira, Vilar Maior and Badamalos, in the municipality of Sabugal.
