The Clock Tower is located in the heart of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, on Rua do Castelo. It stands in an elevated area that was once the oldest urban core of the locality, offering observers a distinct perspective of the surrounding area.
The history of the Clock Tower is deeply intertwined with the medieval past of Vila Nova de Foz Côa. It is believed that this structure was an integral part of the old castle, built during the reign of D. Afonso V, in the 15th century. Today, of the original castle walls, only a few sections withstand time, making the tower one of the few elements that still tell this part of the story.
Over the centuries, the tower underwent significant alterations. Its current form is the result of a significant reconstruction that took place in the 19th century, a period during which the clock mechanisms and the bell were added, giving it the function and name that characterize it today.
With a quadrangular plan, the Clock Tower stands out for its vertical imposingness and robust appearance. Its facades, mostly plastered and painted white, present a notable contrast with the granite stonework elements, such as the quoins, friezes, and window frames, which give it an appearance of great solidity.
The tower is organized into three distinct registers. At its top, where the circular clock faces mark the time for the village in all directions, there is a terrace protected by wrought iron railings. Also noteworthy, on one of its faces, is an old sundial carved in granite stone, a testament to a more traditional way of measuring time.
