Situated in the locality of Folgosinho, in the municipality of Gouveia, this stretch of Roman road is immersed in the unique landscape of the Serra da Estrela.
Its position is marked by a rural and natural environment, slightly inclined and with the presence of rocky outcrops, offering an authentic perspective of the mountainous terrain where it is inserted.
This remarkable section of paved road dates back to the Roman era, having been constructed between the 1st century BC and the 4th century AD. It was originally part of an important military road that connected Linhares to Gouveia, with a significant detour towards Folgosinho and, subsequently, Manteigas.
Its primary function was transportation and communication, serving as a vital link in the ancient road network. Its continuous use over the centuries to the present day, adapted to local paths, is noteworthy.
With an extension of approximately 1250 meters, the paved road follows a course with some inclination and various curves, adapting to the topography of the land. Its construction is a testament to Roman engineering, featuring careful paving.
It is observed that the upper layer, or summa crusta, is composed of stone blocks. On the sides, the stones have a more regular and aligned shape, while in the center of the path, the blocks are of irregular configuration and arrangement. Even today, it is possible to distinguish the deep grooves left by the wheels of wooden carts that once circulated here, marking its long history of use.
Beyond its undeniable historical value as a vestige of Roman presence in the region, this section of the paved road is also enriched by a curious popular legend. It is said that its construction was the work of the "galhardos", a local designation referring to devils, who allegedly built it in a single night of intense thunder.
This detail adds a layer of mystery and fascination to the site, transforming it not only into a mark of ancient transport but also into a living element of the imaginary and popular culture of the Serra da Estrela, preserved as a cultural asset of public interest.
