It is situated within the walls of the historic centre of Trancoso, close to the pillory and the Church of São Pedro.
Although the Brotherhood of Misericórdia has existed since the 16th century, the current building was constructed in the 18th century.
It features late Baroque elements, with characteristic decorative features such as curved-shaped portals and stone-carved details.
It has an elegant portal, surmounted by an oculus (round window) and with the royal coat of arms at the centre. The presence of columns and ornate mouldings is noticeable.
The nave is single and maintains a balanced design, with a wooden ceiling that imitates a vault. It includes two side altars and a pulpit decorated with carved vegetal elements.
Located in the chancel, it stands out for its Neoclassical style, with marbled columns and gilded elements.
Adjacent to the church, it has bay windows and was used for administrative functions of the Brotherhood. In the 19th century, it even housed a pharmacy.
Construction lasted several decades, starting around 1747 and finishing in 1792. During the French invasions in 1810, the space was looted.
The building has undergone regular maintenance over the years, remaining in good condition.
It continues to be a place of worship, but also hosts other functions, such as a shop or cultural space.
