The Chapel of Santa Luzia is located in the town of Trancoso, situated in the area of São Pedro and Santa Maria. It stands on a flat space, slightly set back from the denser urban center, next to one of the roads serving the town. Its position allows it to be observed in isolation, in an environment that combines a peri-urban character with the tranquility of its surroundings.
The history of the Chapel of Santa Luzia dates back to the late 12th century, when it already existed as a parish church, bearing witness to the religious life of Trancoso. Over the centuries, this temple underwent various interventions and reconstructions. Its structure was frequently subject to reforms, particularly from the 17th century onwards, a period of renewal following previous states of degradation. This eventful journey and the persistence in its recovery highlight the chapel's continuous importance to the community. Its historical and heritage value was officially recognized in 1953, with its classification as an Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest).
The Chapel of Santa Luzia is a notable example of the transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles. Despite several renovations, it still preserves medieval elements today that capture the attention of observers. The chancel stands out, the oldest part of the building, where one can appreciate the rich decoration of the machicolations, the projections supporting the cornice, adorned with geometric, zoomorphic, and anthropomorphic motifs. Inside, the triumphal arch, of Gothic design (pointed arch), which connects the nave to the chancel, surprises with its ornamentation featuring checkered patterns and arabesques.
Its portals also reveal an interesting blend of eras. The side portal features a pointed arch, characteristic of the medieval period, while the main facade portal, with a rounded and chamfered arch, is an element from the former Convent of Santa Clara, added during the renovations, giving the chapel an architectural ensemble with diverse historical layers.
