The Chapel of São Martinho stands in the parish of Seixas, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, set within the distinctive landscape of the Upper Douro sub-region. This remarkable site is located at the highest point of a rocky cliff, which in the 18th century was described by a local priest as a natural "castle," possessing a flat summit.
Its commanding position offers unobstructed views of the surroundings, dominating the horizon and allowing for a broad observation of the territory that encircles it, with the majestic Douro River snaking in the distance.
Since very ancient times, the Chapel of São Martinho has been a place of veneration for the image of Saint Martin of Tours, considered by locals as a "friend and protector." Throughout the centuries, the original structure of the temple has undergone several reconstructions and changes of location on the mount.
Although the exact date of its primitive construction remains unknown, it is known that by the 18th century it already attracted a large number of pilgrims. These devotees came with the belief that the saint would protect them from "sezões," an old designation for fevers, and as a form of thanks or promise, they offered two roof tiles, a symbolic gesture that refers to the exposed and sometimes precarious nature of the chapel's roof at that time.
From the top of the mount where the chapel is situated, the gaze is lost over a landscape of unique beauty, a true mosaic created by the hand of man. The slopes are shaped by terraces that host vast areas of vineyards, olive trees, and almond trees.
It is particularly during the almond blossom period that the landscape transforms, painting the valley with white and pink hues, making this scenery even more stunning and ideal for memorable photographic records. The serene course of the Douro River adds a layer of depth and enchantment to the panorama.
Annually, on November 11th, Saint Martin's Day, the chapel and the mount come alive with the traditional pilgrimage in honor of the saint. This event combines religious devotion with popular festivity, bringing together the community and visitors.
The celebration extends throughout the day, culminating in moments of conviviality, where the traditional "magusto", the opportunity to taste roasted chestnuts, and musical entertainment are not lacking, elements that reinforce the welcoming and genuine character of local traditions.
