The Headquarters of Música Nova, Associação Recreativa Filarmónica Popular Manteiguense is located in Urbanização São Pedro, an area within the village of Manteigas itself. This mountain village, nestled in the Zêzere valley and surrounded by the imposing landscape of Serra da Estrela, offers an environment of serenity and natural beauty. The headquarters' location, integrated into the local urban fabric, reflects the deep connection of this institution with the community and its daily life.
The history of Música Nova, or Associação Recreativa Filarmónica Popular Manteiguense, dates back to August 7, 1877, the year it was formally founded and performed for the first time. Its origin is particularly interesting and is linked to a notable episode in Manteigas' social life. It is said that the passion for music in the village intensified after a clown company passed through, which, by selling some instruments, awakened undeniable enthusiasm for the "divine art" among the locals.
Later, in 1877, disagreements related to political issues and the search for a new direction led to the formation of this new philharmonic. With the dedication of local figures, Música Nova quickly established itself, taking its place in the community and actively contributing to Manteigas' cultural life. Since then, the association has come a long way, remaining in uninterrupted activity and serving as a symbol of resilience and love for music in the region.
Beyond its rich history, the Headquarters of Música Nova is today a space of cultural vitality and talent development. It is here that its Music School operates, a fundamental pillar for the continuity of the philharmonic tradition. This school welcomes and trains young musicians from Manteigas, ensuring that musical art continues to flourish and be passed down from generation to generation in the village.
The philharmonic is an active and respected element of the community, regularly participating in concerts, band gatherings, and various local celebrations, including religious festivals and musical exchanges. Its presence is a testament to the deep connection between the people of Manteigas and the art of music. The dedication and commitment of its many members, including the young musicians who form the "Música Nova" Wind Orchestra, founded in 2004, demonstrate the lasting importance of this institution for the village's cultural heritage.
