The Church of Saint John the Baptist is located in the peaceful village of Sameiro, in the municipality of Manteigas. Nestled within the majestic landscape of the Serra da Estrela, its position in the village offers a serene environment and a genuine connection to the rural tranquility of the region, inviting an experience of peace and discovery.
The history of this temple is intimately linked to the village of Sameiro itself, which dates back to the late 12th century, when it was donated to the Order of Saint John the Baptist of Malta. This ancient bond with the order lends the site a particular symbolism, establishing a heritage that spans centuries.
Although the origins of worship at the site are remote, the construction of the church visible today dates back to the early 18th century, around the year 1700. Before its construction, records indicate that the space and religious practices in the 17th century were somewhat neglected, making the construction of the current building a landmark of renewal and continuity for the community of Sameiro.
In its early years, the Church of Saint John the Baptist had a simpler and more contained form. It featured only an altar dedicated to its patron, Saint John the Baptist, and did not possess a tabernacle or the usual brotherhoods and confraternities that often enlivened parish life. This initial simplicity reflects an authenticity that defines its original profile.
The temple underwent its first significant expansion during the first quarter of the 19th century. It was during this phase that the church acquired the dimensions it retains to this day, consolidating its current structure and appearance. This expansion allowed the building to adapt to the needs of the community, while preserving its historical essence and its central role in the village.
