The Chapel of the Holy Spirit is located in Quadrazais, in the municipality of Sabugal, in an area that once marked the end of an old access road to the village, coming from the east. It stands within what was the symbolic perimeter of the urban agglomeration, born after the consolidation of the Reconquista. Its historical position is also inserted within the context of the so-called "Count of Lippe's wall," erected in the post-Seven Years' War period, although the main highlight falls on the chapel itself.
This chapel is notable for its probable antiquity and for how it has maintained its original layout, especially on the exterior, undergoing few changes over the centuries. There are indications that it may have been one of the first religious buildings in the village and perhaps housed the Mother Church in earlier times, an aspect that remains a field of historical study. Throughout history, the chapel played a significant role in the life and faith of the inhabitants of Quadrazais, also serving as a final resting place for many, at a time when space in the cemetery or the Mother Church was scarce.
The Chapel of the Holy Spirit is an example of 17th-century architecture, featuring a simple plan that includes a nave and a chancel. The façade is characterized by a full-arch portal, giving it a humble presence, complemented by a discreet bell tower on the right side. The elaborate stonework on its walls stands out, evidencing the mastery of the artisans of the time. On the north side, a full-arch door can be observed which, due to its craftsmanship, suggests it was reused from another building. Internally, a flight of stairs leads to a low battlement, protected by a parapet where a sentry box is located, an architectural detail that deserves attention.
Since ancient times, the Chapel of the Holy Spirit has been the epicenter of a traditional festival dedicated to the Holy Spirit. This celebration was, and largely still is, organized by single young men and women from the community, who take on the role of stewards, ensuring its realization. In the past, the festivities were marked by the presence of the marching band and traditional fireworks, which enlivened the locality and the devout participants. Although emigration has led many young people to other places, altering some dynamics, the faith and commitment of the community ensure that the festival continues to be a moment of union and devotion, keeping a deeply rooted tradition alive.
