Rapoula do Côa River Beach is located in the eponymous village, part of the municipality of Sabugal, in the district of Guarda. This bathing beach is bathed by the clear waters of the Côa River, which lends its name to the site. Its position in the so-called "border region" (zona da raia), close to the frontier, gives it a unique and highly valued geographical setting.
Set in a beautiful natural landscape, the beach benefits from a constant water flow throughout the year, partly ensured by the Sabugal Dam. It is also a passage point for the Côa Grand Route, a longer trail that enhances the riverside and natural surroundings of this region.
The design of Rapoula do Côa River Beach is marked by a weir that creates an extensive mirror of water, reflecting the surrounding trees. Downstream, a smaller dike forms an additional water level, diversifying the bathing areas. The waters are remarkably clear, allowing observers to see the riverbed and the presence of trout, an indicator of the site's environmental quality.
The banks feature a combination of grassy and wooded areas, along with stretches of sand that invite relaxation. Large granite boulders punctuate the landscape, adding a rustic and characteristic touch. Abundant vegetation provides ample shaded areas, which are particularly inviting on hotter days.
This river beach was designed to provide diverse leisure opportunities. In addition to bathing areas with varied depths, suitable for different swimmers, there is a specific area dedicated to trout sport fishing. The space is organized into gentle terraces, optimizing its use for various activities.
Available infrastructure includes picnic areas and barbecue zones, equipped with benches. The beach also features sanitary facilities, showers, and changing rooms. For entertainment, visitors will find a children's playground and a multi-sport court. There is also a water slide that allows users to glide directly into the water, a fun way to enter the river.
One of the standout features at Rapoula do Côa River Beach is the presence of an old mill. This structure, a testament to the past and local traditions, can be observed by visitors, offering insight into former working methods. The mill symbolizes the history and continuous use of this space by the community, which has always enjoyed the Côa's waters for leisure and daily activities.
The beach is a meeting and socialising point, maintaining a mostly bucolic atmosphere for much of the year, which transforms into a lively leisure area, especially during the summer months, when more people flock to enjoy the river's coolness.
