The wayside cross stands in the heart of Paranhos da Beira, in the municipality of Seia, on a slight elevation overlooking the surrounding houses. Set against an old cobbled street, it easily integrates into a stroll through the urban core.
An ancient symbol of municipal autonomy, the Carvalhal Pillory dates back to the settlement resettled during the reign of King Dinis. Registered in 1527 as a place within the territory of Seia, it preserves traces of its former administrative status in its base.
It rests on three very worn quadrangular steps, with the lowest one partially embedded in the pavement. The cubic base, adorned with archaic geometric motifs, supports a modern Latin cross made of concrete.
The granite of the neighboring houses and the quiet streets reinforce the site's rural character. The interaction between the ancient block and the contemporary cross invites a brief pause for historical contemplation.
