The Gouveia Ecological Park is located in the locality of Gouveia, in a rural area known as Quinta da Borrachota. Situated a short distance from the town center, this space offers a tranquil environment and invites direct contact with nature, providing a perspective of the environmental richness that characterizes the Serra da Estrela region.
Inaugurated in June 1999, the Gouveia Ecological Park was an initiative of the Municipality and occupies an area of 6 hectares. Its main purpose is raising awareness and educating on environmental issues. More than just an exhibition of animals, this park was conceived as an interactive place, where the aim is to foster a deeper understanding in the visitor about the relationship of various species with their natural habitats, valuing the didactic component of each observation.
In the park, it is possible to discover a representative sample of the flora and fauna present in the Serra da Estrela. Besides various plant species that make up the mountain ecosystems, the park is home to mammals and birds, both native and some exotic ones. Along the paths, visitors can observe a variety of animals such as wild boars, fallow deer, and deer, complemented by other species of mammals, birds, and reptiles, which illustrate the region's biodiversity.
The Gouveia Ecological Park has undergone valorization and rehabilitation interventions, with the aim of modernizing its infrastructure, improving the landscape, and, above all, enhancing the well-being conditions of the animals. These works also included adapting the paths to ensure better accessibility for all visitors. The park maintains close collaboration with CERVAS (Center for Ecology, Recovery, and Surveillance of Wild Animals), a facility that functions as a "hospital" for wild fauna, dedicated to the recovery of injured or debilitated animals for their eventual reintroduction into the wild. This partnership underscores the park's active role in nature conservation and the promotion of environmental education.
