The Forcadas Necropolis is located in a rural and tranquil landscape, on the outskirts of the small locality of Forcadas, which belongs to the municipality of Fornos de Algodres. It is situated about 125 meters north of the village, at an altitude of 640 meters, which provides a sense of isolation and contact with the surrounding nature. Access is via a dirt path that starts from the northern area of the settlement, leading to a serene place conducive to introspection.
This unique site offers a glimpse into a distant era, with its origin traced back to the 7th or 8th centuries. Although this type of rock-cut tomb was a common practice in the region between the 6th and 14th centuries, the Forcadas Necropolis represents one of the oldest manifestations. Some historians even suggest a possible link to the Visigothic culture, making the visit a true journey into the medieval past.
The central feature of the necropolis is its approximately twenty-five tombs, all of them carved directly into the granite bedrock. They are distinguished by their varied shapes, some oval, others rectangular or trapezoidal, and by the absence of anthropomorphic features, meaning they do not follow the shape of the human body. It is noteworthy that some of these graves are located side by side, in pairs, suggesting "geminated" burials. Originally, it is thought that these structures were covered by granite slabs, which are now lost or displaced.
Visiting the Forcadas Necropolis is more than just observing archaeological remains; it is an opportunity to experience an atmosphere of quietude and reflection. Far from the hustle and bustle of modern life, this place invites contemplation of the landscape and imagination of past lives. Its simplicity and natural setting lend it a unique atmosphere, perfect for those seeking a moment of peace and an authentic connection with history and nature.
