The Almeida Military History Museum is located within the impressive Almeida fortress, specifically in the underground section of the Bulwark of St. John of God. It is situated near Porta Nova (New Gate), one of the entrances to the town's walled enclosure, directly integrated into the defensive structure that characterizes this historic locality.
The building housing the museum is, in itself, a piece of historical and architectural interest: the Casemates. Built in the 18th century as an integral part of the fortress's defense, these structures are robust underground galleries, designed to withstand intense bombardments. There are twenty of these vaulted chambers in total, most equipped with ventilation tunnels, a remarkable detail of military engineering of the time. Due to their design and scale, they are considered unique structures.
Originally, these deep galleries played crucial roles in the life of the fortress, both during periods of conflict and in times of peace. They served as a safe refuge for the population during attacks or sieges, protecting them under the thick, robust vaults. They were also essential for storing provisions and supplies necessary for subsistence. They even had their own cistern and well to ensure water supply. Their alternative designation, Old Barracks, stems from the need for infantry lodging that the fortress sometimes faced.
Currently, the Casemates have been transformed into the venue for the Almeida Military History Museum, inviting visitors on a journey through time and the military history of the site. The exhibition route, occupying seven of the underground galleries, guides visitors from the most remote origins of the region up to 20th-century conflicts, with a particular focus on the events of the Peninsular War and the famous Siege of Almeida. Through interactive and multimedia content, and the display of replicas and original weaponry, the museum allows visitors to understand the evolution of war strategies and the crucial role Almeida played in various historical periods.
