Located in the village of Moreira de Rei, in the municipality of Trancoso, district of Guarda, in Portugal.
The site has prehistoric origins, with a castro that was Romanized. During the Reconquista, the region was integrated into the Asturian-Leonese territory in the 10th century. The first castle was mentioned in 960, but nothing remains of it due to subsequent attacks.
In the 11th century, Moreira de Rei became an important center. In 1055, it was conquered by Fernando Magno. With the independence of Portugal, the castle was rebuilt and the village received a Charter of Foral from D. Afonso Henriques.
From the 13th century onwards, the castle and the village lost importance, not receiving significant reforms during the reigns of D. Afonso III and D. Dinis. An attempt at revitalization occurred with the New Foral of D. Manuel I in 1512.
The castle was classified as a National Monument in 1932. In the 1940s, consolidation, restoration and reconstruction works were carried out on sections of the walls.
Today, the castle is in ruins and needs greater attention and conservation from the authorities.
