The São Marcos Mines are located in the small area of Frechão, part of the locality of Freches and Torres, in the municipality of Trancoso. This site is situated in a rural area of inland Portugal, characterized by a landscape bearing traces of human activity throughout the centuries. Its position, somewhat removed from busier urban centers, grants it an environment of tranquility, where nature and history intertwine. Its proximity to historical geographical landmarks, such as the São Marcos hermitage, gives this area its name, placing it within a context of ancient traditions and local events.
What is known today as the São Marcos Mines points to a significant phase of mining exploration in the Trancoso region. These mines, which primarily focused on the extraction of tungsten, were particularly active in the mid-20th century. Their operation was crucial for the local and national economy, given the high demand for this mineral, essential for the wartime and technological industries of the time. The exploitation left visible marks on the terrain, testimonies to an era of intense industrial activity, where hundreds of workers found their livelihood.
The landscape surrounding the São Marcos Mines still holds the echoes of its industrial past. Upon exploring the area, one can observe the traces of the old mining exploitation, such as terraces, spoil heaps (mounds of extraction waste), and sometimes, ruins of buildings that supported the operations. These structures and the alterations to the terrain tell the story of human labor and the transformation of the landscape by industrial action. The area offers a unique setting for those interested in industrial archaeology and how nature reclaims spaces altered by human hands, providing a unique perspective on the impact and legacy of mining.
