The place where Jardim de Gonçalo is located is part of a village with a history dating back to the 17th century, the period when the settlement of Gonçalo was elevated to a parish. Once a priory, Gonçalo belonged to the municipality of Valhelhas, which was extinguished in the mid-19th century. The elevation of the parish seat to the status of a village, which occurred in June 1995, marks an important milestone in its evolution and recognition in the regional panorama.

The Origin of the Name

The toponym "Gonçalo" has historical roots dating back to medieval figures. It is estimated that the name may derive from personalities such as Gonçalo Pérez or Gonçalo Martínez, possibly masters of military orders who held the Commandery of the municipality of Valhelhas until 1385, under the rule of D. João I of Portugal, Master of the Order of Avis. This origin gives the place a historical dimension that echoes the beginnings of Portuguese territorial organization.

Artisanal Legacy

Beyond its administrative and toponymic history, Gonçalo is recognized for its strong tradition in basket weaving. Since the late 18th century, this manual art has profoundly marked the community's life, reaching its peak between the 1960s and 1970s. During this period, hundreds of basket makers dedicated themselves to this activity, demonstrating the ingenuity and skill of the inhabitants. Although the sector's dynamics have diminished over time, this cultural legacy remains an integral part of the village's identity, reflecting a heritage of work and creativity.
