The Church of Santa Maria / Church of the Holy Spirit is located on Rua da Igreja, in the heart of Castelo Melhor, municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa. Tucked away on a narrow cobbled street, it marks the highest point of the village.
From its exterior, glimpses of the Douro valley and the vineyard terraces can be seen, giving it a typically Trás-os-Montes setting.
With roots dating back to the late 16th century, the building underwent profound renovations in the 18th-century Baroque period, visible in the ornamental profiles and the robustness of the granite masonry.
Throughout the centuries, it served both as a parish seat and a venue for community ceremonies, maintaining a strong link with local religious traditions.
The main facade displays a segmental arch portal, flanked by granite pilasters and topped by a curved pediment. To the right, stands the bell tower, with a visible bell and clock face.
On the side gable, small rustic stone crosses are embedded in the white wall, creating a discreet rhythm and a contrast of textures that reveals attention to detail.
The interior, with a single nave, still preserves traces of gilded carving and simple altarpieces, providing an atmosphere of serenity and contemplation.
Outside, the silence of the cobbled street invites visitors to pause and appreciate the harmony between the white walls, the warm tone of the roof tiles, and the aged granite.
