The Church of Misericórdia is located in the heart of Sabugal, in the most central area of the town. Situated in Largo da Misericórdia, the building stands in a flat area, surrounded by an urban fabric that still retains traces of its traditional character, providing a peaceful environment for visitors.
The roots of this church date back to the 13th or 14th centuries, a period when it is believed to have been built as a parish church, dedicated to Saint Michael, under the aegis of the Order of Malta. Over time, its function evolved significantly. In the 16th century, the church became dependent on the Brotherhood of Misericórdia of Sabugal, assuming a new purpose of support and hospitality, with a small hospice for pilgrims nearby.
In 1673, the temple underwent significant modifications, documented by an inscription. These interventions, driven by Prior Luís de Sousa Couto, included the opening of new openings with straight lintels and, possibly, changes to the chancel roof, contributing to the building's current configuration.
The church's architecture displays a fusion of its Romanesque origins and the features of later interventions. On the main façade, facing west, a full arch portal stands out, with archivolts resting on small columns, topped by a circular oculus. The cornice, supported by corbels, is decorated with geometric motifs that invite careful observation.
One of the most notable and historically curious elements is found on the north façade: a stone block where an ancient standard measure, known as the côvado, is carved. This unique stone also displays two crosses of the Order of Malta, inscribed within circles. This vestige is a fascinating testament to ancient commercial practices and the presence of the Order in the region in remote times.
Inside, the nave is single and features a wooden beam ceiling. Notable features include altars with carved altarpieces, including the Chapel of Senhor dos Passos, and a pulpit resting on a fluted shaft column, with a polygonal stone balcony decorated with rhombuses.
