The Church of Misericórdia is located in the city of Guarda, in an area historically known as Judiaria. Its location is particular, as it marked, in the 18th century, the urban expansion of the city beyond its medieval walls. It is situated in an open space, Largo João de Almeida, which allows for a comprehensive view of its facade.
This church stands out as the most expressive Baroque work in the city of Guarda. Its facade is particularly striking, characterized by the contrast between the exposed granite of its structural and decorative elements and the white of its whitewashed walls, an aesthetic that gives it great expressiveness. Its proportions reveal remarkable harmony and elegance, inspiring other religious constructions in the region.
The main portal, with its arch and pilasters, is topped by the coat of arms of D. João V, marking the royal commission for its reconstruction in the 18th century. Higher up, in a niche, one can observe the image of the Virgin of Misericórdia, in jasper. Flanking the facade, two bell towers rise, topped by unique superimposed pyramidal domes, giving it a distinctive silhouette in the urban landscape.
The interior of the church has a single nave, with a wooden ceiling that simulates a barrel vault. The space is enhanced by the presence of a high choir, supported by an elegant arch, and by side pulpits and tribunes that reflect a possible Jesuit influence.
The Baroque altars are one of the highlights of the interior, with emphasis on the main chapel's altar, of considerable dimensions. The main altarpiece and the side altars feature gilded and polychrome carving, adding richness and detail to the ensemble. In the main chapel, on the north side, is the tomb of the church's founder, Simão Antunes de Pina, with a singular recumbent granite effigy, which combines late Gothic features with Renaissance influences. On the nave floor, old tomb covers can be observed, bearing witness to the various stages of the temple's life and history.
It is important to note that the Church of Misericórdia stands on a site with a profound religious past, where, previously, D. Sancho II ordered the construction of the second Cathedral of Guarda.
