Located in the village of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, the Ephraim Bueno Interpretive Center is situated on Rua Dr. Ricardo Machado, in the heart of the ancient Jewish Quarter. This positioning within the historic area allows visitors to immediately feel the atmosphere emanating from the past presence of a Jewish community, contextualizing the center's objective within its urban environment.
This space is dedicated to exploring the history of Jewish presence in the municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. The Ephraim Bueno Interpretive Center gathers and presents a documentary collection that narrates the passage and legacy of this community in the region. It allows for an understanding of the cultural and social importance these populations had throughout the centuries in the territory.
The center is named in homage to Ephraim Bueno (1599-1665), a notable figure in history. Born in Castelo Rodrigo, Bueno was a physician, physicist, and writer, achieving great distinction and professional and social relevance at the court of the Netherlands. His life is a testament to the journey and contribution of many individuals from the Jewish community of that era.
The center presents concrete and duly inventoried evidence of Jewish presence in the municipality. This documentation includes records and marks found in various archives, such as the royal chanceries, as well as information from the Inquisition processes that targeted the people of this territory. Through these elements, visitors can deepen their knowledge of the daily life and challenges faced by the local Jewish population.
