This center is located in the Castle Zone, in the picturesque village of Castelo Rodrigo, an integral part of the municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. Its strategic location connects visitors directly to the historical setting where the events commemorated here unfolded, immersing them in an area with a strong link to the past of this borderland.
The Castelo Rodrigo Battle Interpretive Center is dedicated to revisiting one of the most important moments in Portuguese military history: the Battle of Castelo Rodrigo. This conflict, fought on July 7, 1664, during the Portuguese Restoration War, was decisive for the affirmation of Portugal's independence. The center offers an opportunity to understand the dimension and significance of this military victory, which consolidated a pivotal period for the nation.
The visit is structured into six thematic nuclei, guiding the visitor on a chronological and contextual journey. It covers the period preceding the Philippine domination from 1580, explores the actions of figures such as the Marquesses of Castelo Rodrigo, and delves into the Restoration of Independence in 1640. The route culminates in the Restoration War itself, with special emphasis on the battle that gives the center its name, and its developments until the signing of the Peace Treaty. One of the nuclei also features a weapons room, enriching the experience with a look at the instruments of the era.
In addition to the presentation of pieces and artifacts, the center focuses on the use of multimedia and interactive content. This modern approach allows for a deeper immersion into the events, making history accessible and engaging. The various visual and interactive supports were designed to complement the historical narrative, offering different perspectives and layers of understanding about this borderland and its role in the destiny of Portugal.
