It stands next to Praça 5 de Outubro, one of the most characteristic spots in the town, marking the urban landscape of this ancient area. Its Uncertain Origin

The history of the Clock Tower is shrouded in some uncertainty, as the exact date of its construction and its original purpose are not consensual among historians. One of the theories suggests that the building dates back to the 14th or 15th centuries and that it may have been part of a defense system, perhaps as a barbican, or an advanced structure that helped protect Celorico Castle.

However, another line of thought argues that the tower is later, dating from the 16th or 17th centuries. According to this perspective, its construction was specifically intended to house a public clock, at a time when the installation of such equipment was becoming common in towns across the country, an advancement in the organization of community time.

A Landmark in the Town's Time

Regardless of its genesis, it is certain that the Clock Tower played a central role in the life of Celorico da Beira over the centuries, assuming the function of regulating time for its inhabitants. The town's clock did not always remain in this location, having been moved to the castle and then returned to its current position in the tower. Since at least the early 17th century, the population has been guided by the hours struck by the bell that echoes from the top of the tower.

The way the current clock face has been integrated into the structure, visible in the stonework that surrounds it, is remarkable. The bell, which still strikes the hours today, is positioned at the top, contributing to the iconic image of this monument that punctuates the town's daily life.

Regeneration and Legacy

After a period in which the Clock Tower structure showed signs of degradation, the building underwent significant regeneration work. The primary objectives of this work were the restoration of the clock mechanism and the revitalization of the tower as a space of cultural interest.

Currently, the Clock Tower represents a testament to the past of Celorico da Beira, functioning as an element that not only preserves historical memory but also presents itself as a point of value for the enhancement of local heritage.
