The Rural World House (Casa do Mundo Rural) is located in Prados, a village in the municipality of Celorico da Beira. It is situated in a serene village, integrated into a rural environment characteristic of Beira Interior, where the surrounding landscape reflects the region's strong connection to the land and its agricultural and pastoral traditions.
This space offers a detailed perspective on the way of life that once shaped the communities of Beira. The house illustrates a period when the subsistence of the populations depended essentially on agriculture and pastoralism. It thus allows for an understanding of the daily practices and the self-sufficiency economy that were fundamental pillars for those who inhabited this area.
Inside the Rural World House, the environments of a typical old-time dwelling are recreated, offering a glimpse into a period when modern conveniences were non-existent. It is possible to observe how people lived without running water, electricity, or an indoor bathroom. The structure of the building is a clear example of this life: the lower floor served to house animals, also contributing to heating the dwelling upstairs, and was used to store tools and agricultural products such as potatoes, rye, wine, and olive oil. On the upper floor were the living and resting areas, with the kitchen, living room, and bedrooms.
More than just a mere museum core, the Rural World House of Prados functions as a point of interest that appeals to the visitor's imagination, inviting an immersion into the experiences of yesteryear. Through its reconstitution, it seeks to safeguard and transmit the local collective memory, offering an elucidative experience on the unique history and culture of this region.
