Its Origin and Legend

The history of the Nossa Senhora Do Monte Chapel is enveloped in a legend passed down from generation to generation. According to oral tradition, the initial construction of the hermitage was attempted at a slightly lower point on the hill. However, the stones and materials deposited there for the work were, mysteriously, found the next day at the summit, at the highest point. This phenomenon was interpreted as the will of Nossa Senhora to have her temple built at the highest point, thus allowing her to view her "seven sisters," a symbolic reference to other chapels or peaks in the region.

Legacy and Devotion

Throughout the centuries, the Nossa Senhora Do Monte Chapel has been a central point of devotion and tradition in the community. In times past, the hermitage had its own hermit, who looked after the place and welcomed the faithful. One of the most singular practices, which demonstrates the deeply rooted faith of the people, was that of shepherds who would bring their flocks to the chapel. They would circle the hermitage three times with their animals, believing in Nossa Senhora's powers of intercession for the healing and protection of livestock, a vital element for the region's subsistence.
