The Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Nossa Senhora do Carmo) is located in the town of Manteigas, a mountain village nestled in the natural landscape of Serra da Estrela. The building is integrated into the urban fabric of the village, serving as a landmark that reflects the life and traditions of the local community. Its presence complements the tranquil and authentic atmosphere of Manteigas.
The history of the chapel dates back to an initiative by José Ramos dos Santos Roque, a resident of Manteigas, who commissioned its construction with a very particular purpose. His desire was to provide his son, Father Zeferino Roque, with a suitable place for his religious mission. This space was designed not only for preaching but also as a centre where Catholic doctrine could be taught to the village children.
The inauguration of this chapel took place on November 1, 1949. The ceremony was presided over by Canon Manuel Mendes do Carmo, who represented the Prelate, marking a significant moment for the spiritual and communal life of Manteigas.
Inside the Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, visitors will find images of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the patron saint who gives the place its name, and of Saint Christopher. The image of Saint Christopher has a curious history and a particular symbolic value, given that it was a gift from a group of hunters from Gouveia. Its blessing was performed by a prominent ecclesiastical figure, Cardinal D. Teodósio de Gouveia, who at the time was the prelate of Lourenço Marques, in Mozambique.
