The Chapel of Mileu is located in the city of Guarda, in an area known as Mileu. Nestled in an urban and residential environment, this chapel offers a peaceful contrast to city life. Its position in the Mileu area allows for easy access, situating it in surroundings that, despite being developed, maintain an atmosphere conducive to contemplating its historical and architectural value.
This modest temple transports us to the Middle Ages, the period in which it is believed to have been built. Its origin is, according to tradition, linked to significant events in local history, such as the transfer of the diocese to Guarda, at the initiative of D. Sancho I. It is, therefore, a testament to the long history of the region, which may have served as a stopping point or hermitage for pilgrims en route to Santiago de Compostela, reinforcing its role as a place of secular devotion to Our Lady of Mileu, since the 13th century.
The Chapel of Mileu exhibits architecture of Romanesque essence, characterized by its simplicity and compact proportions. The structure is divided into two juxtaposed rectangular volumes: a single nave and a chancel slightly lower and narrower. On the facade, a full-arch portico adorned with archivolts stands out. Despite the predominant Romanesque style, the chapel reveals elements that herald the transition to Gothic, such as the presence of rose windows and a broken triumphal arch separating the nave from the chancel. The main facade, though sober, is enriched by a rose window with a touch of Mudéjar influence.
A careful look reveals the richness of the sculptural details that embellish this chapel. On the side facades, the corbels display a variety of figures, from geometric motifs such as half-spheres and rosettes, to vegetal and zoomorphic representations, including birds, wolf heads, and curious human heads. Inside, the capitals of the triumphal arch are equally remarkable. The capital on the north side features a female human head flanked by a fierce animal and floral elements. On the south side, two birds are depicted in confrontation, enclosing a stylized Tree of Life, and small demonic-looking heads in the corners, inviting interpretation and contemplation of their symbolism.
The name "Mileu" holds an ancient popular legend that contributes to the uniqueness of this place. It is said that, in the distant past, thieves tried to plunder the chapel. As they left, with the door closing, they uttered: «now not even a thousand men can catch us». Suddenly, a mysterious voice replied: «For a thousand... me!». The marauders then found themselves trapped to the door's ring, with no way to escape. The phrase "mil... eu" (a thousand... me) thus became the toponym that today designates this area and its chapel, adding a touch of mystery and tradition to your visit.
