The Chapel of Our Lady of Copacabana stands in the urbanization of Outeiro de Cima, an elevated point in the peaceful village of Figueiró da Granja, in the municipality of Fornos de Algodres. Its position offers an atmosphere of serenity and provides a perspective over the surrounding village. The churchyard, or chapel square, is delimited by a wall, inviting a moment of tranquility and reflection in the heart of the community.
The foundation of the Chapel of Our Lady of Copacabana dates back to the 17th century, initiated by Father Simão Soveral, who is buried there. This place of worship holds a remarkable history, linked to its unusual name. Ancient chronicles reveal that Father Simão, gravely ill during a stay in Peru, in a village also named Copacabana, where a Marian image was greatly venerated, made a solemn promise. He pledged to build a sanctuary in his homeland if he was granted healing and a safe return. Recovered and back in Fornos de Algodres, the priest fulfilled his promise, erecting this chapel as a testament to his faith and gratitude.
The chapel exhibits a simple and robust architecture, characteristic of its era. Its quadrangular plan and four-pitched roof, topped by a straight gable facade, give it a discreet but striking presence. Although the original 17th-century building has not entirely withstood time, the people of Figueiró da Granja committed themselves to its reconstruction, ensuring the permanence of this space of faith and memory. A small cruzeiro (stone cross), located at the northern end of the churchyard, complements the ensemble, highlighting its religious and cultural identity. It is important to note that some artistic elements, such as the carved altar and certain panels, mentioned in past records, are not currently preserved inside the chapel.
Throughout the centuries, the Chapel of Our Lady of Copacabana has established itself as an important center of devotion for the community and surrounding areas. Historical accounts describe it as a place of pilgrimage, where numerous faithful flocked, at different times of the year, to implore graces or give thanks for miracles. This deep spiritual connection is manifested in the history of community 'vows', such as the one observed by the parish of Muxagata until the beginning of the 20th century, demonstrating the lasting significance of the chapel in the religious and social fabric of the region. The space maintains its symbolic and spiritual value, inviting contemplation and recognition of its history and its legacy for the community.
