The Chapel of Santa Bárbara stands in a rural and isolated setting, on the summit of the hill of the same name, a place believed to have been an ancient Castro settlement. This elevated position offers a dominant view over the parish of Algodres, within the municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo.
From the chapel's atrium, the main facade faces the imposing Serra da Marofa, providing a landscape setting that invites contemplation of the vast surrounding scenery of the Guarda region.
The Chapel of Santa Bárbara presents a religious architecture of simple and functional design, characterized by its parallelepiped volume and a wooden gable roof. The facades, plastered and whitewashed, are adorned with stonework elements of granite, such as the base and the corners finished with pinnacles, which lend robustness to the construction.
On the main facade, facing west, there is a straight lintel portal with a protruding frame. Curiously, this facade is crowned by a geodetic marker, an element that distinguishes it. Inside, visitors find a welcoming atmosphere, with white walls and a floor of granite slabs. The highlight is the painted carved altarpiece, dating from the first half of the 17th century, which, with its blue, pink, and gold colors, and the representation of cherubs and the dove of the Holy Spirit, reflects the Mannerist art of the period.
The history of the Chapel of Santa Bárbara dates back to the 17th and 19th centuries, the period during which its current structure and the Mannerist altarpiece were conceived. Although its exact origin is lost in time, records from 1758 describe it as an important place of worship, situated on an elevated point north of the old village of Algodres, belonging to the parishioners.
Over the centuries, this chapel has been the stage for religious traditions rooted in the community. For example, it was a pilgrimage destination for the inhabitants of the parish of Vilar de Amargo, who came here annually on the second day of the Rogation days, reinforcing its role as a center of faith and unity for the local populations. The building still maintains its religious use today, being municipal property.
