Location

Lagos Zoo is situated in an area slightly set back from the city centre of Lagos, within the zone known as Quinta Figueiras. Its location, between the towns of Barão de São João and Bensafrim, gives it a more tranquil environment, integrated into the rural landscape of the inner municipality, providing a natural setting for a visit.

A World of Animals

This park invites visitors on a journey through the animal kingdom, showcasing a vast diversity of species. Visitors can observe approximately one hundred and fifty different species, originating from various continents. From mammals to birds, including reptiles and fish, the collection aims to represent the richness of global biodiversity. Notable groups include one of the largest collections of capuchin monkeys and the presence of animals such as flying foxes and pygmy hippos.

Habitat Recreation

One of the distinctive aspects of Lagos Zoo is the effort made to create environments that simulate the animals' natural habitats. The planning of the space was designed to provide suitable conditions for the resident species. One of the most notable enclosures is "Boulders Beach," which recreates the environment of a rocky beach, home to African penguins, where visitors can observe them swimming in a pool.

Beyond the Enclosures

The park is not limited to the defined spaces for exotic animals. Lagos Zoo also functions as a refuge and observation point for local fauna. Its natural surroundings attract native species, such as various birds, which find a safe place to nest and live within the park, integrating local biodiversity into the visitor experience.

The Creation of a Space

The history of Lagos Zoo dates back to the late 1990s, with the commencement of its construction. It was formally inaugurated on November 16, 2000, as a result of the vision of its founder, Paulo Figueiras. The park was conceived as an educational and leisure space, with a special emphasis on the design of its areas and the faithful recreation of environments for the animals, earning it recognition for the quality of its facilities and care.
