Location

The Torre de Santo António do Alto is located in one of the highest areas of the city of Faro, in the Sé e São Pedro district. This privileged position offers a broad and unique perspective over the urban center, with views extending over the surrounding landscape and reaching as far as the neighboring city of Olhão.

Access to the tower allows for a gradual ascent that unfolds in several stages, culminating in a circular upper terrace. Each landing on the climb reveals a panorama that progressively widens, promising a striking visual experience over the capital of the Algarve.

Origins and Historical Legacy

The history of the Torre de Santo António do Alto dates back to the 14th century, with the construction of a medieval watchtower in 1355, erected by order of D. Afonso IV. Over time, this military structure was integrated into a hermitage, which was likely built in the second half of the 15th century. This fusion of purposes gave the site a unique character, combining observation with religious worship.

Over the centuries, the building underwent several architectural transformations. In the 16th century, the lower part of the tower was adapted to serve as the main chapel, receiving a distinctive Manueline-style star vault. Later, in the 18th century, it underwent significant renovations that altered its configuration, including the construction of a gallery and a sacristy, and the enlargement of the nave which culminated in a new facade. In the 20th century, the tower was further extended to incorporate a water tank, while still maintaining access for visitors to enjoy the panoramic view.

Artistic and Cultural Heritage

Inside the hermitage, visitors can discover a remarkable artistic collection, resulting from the different periods of its construction and renovation. The altarpiece of the main chapel, a carved work from the 18th century by Manuel Martins, stands out. The space also houses an interesting collection of Baroque imagery and an 18th-century tile panel that lines part of the walls.

Next to the hermitage, there is a museum space dedicated to Saint Anthony, the Museu Antonino. Here, one can admire a collection of images, paintings, and engravings that illustrate the devotion to the saint, complemented by a tile panel on the facade, which depicts "Saint Anthony Preaching to the Fish".

A Stunning Perspective

Climbing the Torre de Santo António do Alto is an opportunity to appreciate one of the most impressive views of Faro. From its top, the city unfolds below, with its characteristic rooftops and the Ria Formosa in the background, offering an ideal setting for contemplation and for capturing the beauty of the Algarve landscape. The panorama that unfolds on the upper terrace is considered one of the most extensive and appealing in the region, providing a comprehensive understanding of the local geography.
