Tavira's Public Garden, also known as Jardim do Coreto (Bandstand Garden), is centrally located in the city, specifically downtown, on the right bank of the Gilão River. This prime location in Tavira's Historic Centre allows for easy access, inviting visitors to take a break while exploring the surrounding area.
This is the city's oldest public garden, a testament to 19th-century landscape architecture. Its creation in 1890 was part of Tavira's urban development period, serving as an essential space for social gatherings and recreation for the population. Interestingly, before its construction, this area was occupied by "tercenas," which were granaries located by the river, revealing an interesting transformation of the urban space over time.
At the centre of the garden stands the bandstand, a striking element of 19th-century iron architecture. This bandstand, which gives the garden its alternative name, was manufactured in the city of Porto and arrived in Tavira by sea for its inauguration. In 1944, a lake was added to surround the bandstand, creating a serene environment where fish and turtles can be observed, complemented by rocks and various aquatic plants.
Tavira's Public Garden is characterized by its diverse vegetation that contributes to its welcoming atmosphere. Here, one finds a variety of tree species, such as date palms, Canary Island palms, white poplars, and European nettle trees. The flowerbeds, with agapanthus, jasmine, dahlias, and oleanders, add colour and comfort, making this space a pleasant spot for a leisurely stroll or a moment of rest. The garden also hosts two busts by sculptor Raul Xavier, honouring prominent figures linked to Tavira: António Cabreira, a mathematician, and Isidoro Manuel Pires, a local poet and politician.
