The Castle Garden is located in the heart of Tavira's urban fabric, in the Vila-A-Dentro area, and is completely surrounded by the historical walls of Tavira Castle. Situated at an altitude of approximately nineteen meters, the garden offers an elevated position that provides unique perspectives over the city and the surrounding landscape.
The main access to the garden is through one of the castle's old gates, located to the northwest, inviting an entrance that immediately transports the visitor to a space of tranquility and memory.
This place, today a serene garden, possesses a profound history dating back to the Neolithic period, when a first fortification, a hillfort, was erected here. Over the centuries, the space has witnessed various transformations, reflecting the eras and cultures that shaped Tavira.
The imposing walls that delimit the garden are a remarkable example of military architecture, with origins dating back to the 11th century, under Arab influence, and have undergone various reconstructions and adaptations over time. After serving defensive functions, military accommodation, and even as a cemetery during the 18th century, the site was finally acquired by the City Council in the 20th century. It was then that the creation of the garden and viewpoint we know today was ordered, offering a new cultural and recreational purpose to this site of great historical value. The castle walls are classified as a National Monument, underscoring their patrimonial importance.
The Castle Garden features an almost quadrangular design, harmoniously integrated within the perimeter of the ancient walls. Inside, a network of narrow gravel paths unfolds, organized with a geometric layout that invites tranquil exploration of the space.
Among the paths, carefully arranged flowerbeds, also with a geometric design, and some trellises along the main route stand out. These features contribute to a sense of order and beauty, inviting calm strolls and contemplation.
The vegetation of the Castle Garden is diverse, contributing to its beauty and inviting atmosphere. Trees such as the striking dombeyas and the flourishing jacarandas can be observed, in addition to fig trees and rubber trees, which offer shade and a cool environment. Among the shrubs, agaves, hibiscus, and oleanders are found, adding color and landscaping interest throughout the year.
In certain sections of the walls, the exuberant bougainvillea creeper flourishes, creating a vibrant contrast with the ancient stone. This combination of varied flora with the historical structure gives the garden a unique ambiance, ideal for a moment of pause and appreciation.
One of the most captivating aspects of the Castle Garden are the stunning views it provides. Thanks to its elevated position, visitors can enjoy a panoramic perspective that embraces the mouth of the Gilão River, extending over the vast landscape of the Ria Formosa and revealing the rooftops and architecture of Tavira's historic center. These views allow an understanding of the city's connection to the river and the sea, recalling its former importance as a seaport. It is a privileged location to observe the natural and urban beauty of the region.
