This beach is located on the coastal zone west of Albufeira's center. It is nestled and protected by steep cliffs, characteristic of the Algarve landscape. The main access to the sandy area is by descending a wooden staircase from the top of the cliff. Before descending, the clifftop offers a wide perspective over the beach and the adjacent coastline.
Its location, slightly set apart from Albufeira's busier areas, gives it a more tranquil atmosphere. There are paths on the upper part of the cliff that allow visitors to appreciate the natural surroundings and discover different angles of the coastal landscape.
Despite the name, there is no actual castle on this beach. The name "Castelo" (Castle) seems to have two possible origins. One is associated with the presence of remnants of a watchtower that existed on the site in the 16th century. This tower served to protect the coast from potential pirate attacks.
The other explanation for the name refers to a large rock formation that is partially submerged in the eastern part of the beach. With some imagination, the shape of this rock can resemble the battlements of a castle, also contributing to the origin of the beach's toponym.
Praia do Castelo is characterized by a soft, golden sandy area, framed by tall, ocher-toned cliffs. The action of erosion over time has sculpted the cliffs and given rise to peculiar rock formations, both on the cliff face and scattered across the sand and in the water.
Along the coastline and in the water, there are various rocks and small formations that create interesting nooks. The transparency of the water makes it inviting for swimming and, in suitable conditions, observing the seabed (snorkeling). It is also a place where various shells can be found in the sand.
With a relatively modest extension, Praia do Castelo offers a more secluded and calm environment compared to larger beaches or those closer to Albufeira's urban center. It is a place appreciated by those seeking tranquility.
During the bathing season, the beach is monitored by lifeguards, ensuring greater safety for bathers. The quality of the water and sand is recognized by the annual Blue Flag distinction. It is important to be aware of areas near the cliffs, as there is a risk of rockfalls.
