Sand City Lagoa is located in Sítio das Medronheiras, in the town and municipality of Lagoa. This sculpture park is situated in an easily identifiable and accessible area, positioned near one of the main communication routes of the Algarve region.
Its establishment in Lagoa offers visitors a spacious outdoor cultural area to explore the art of sand sculpture, within the geographical context of this Algarve municipality.
This cultural space is dedicated to the exhibition of large-scale sculptures, entirely created from sand. The park hosts a vast collection of works, exceeding 120 sculptures, conceived by a diverse group of over 60 artists, both Portuguese and international.
The sculptures address a multitude of themes, representing well-known figures, recreating emblematic scenes, or portraying curiosities from the world of fantasy and reality. The art and technique of the sculptors are manifested in the details and the impressive scale of the exhibited creations.
The genesis of this artistic project dates back to 2003, with the birth of the International Sand Sculpture Festival (FIESA). For nearly two decades, this festival established itself as a significant cultural event, attracting public attention due to the uniqueness of its exhibitions.
In response to the need for evolution and adaptation, the project moved to its current location in Lagoa. This transition gave rise to Sand City, maintaining the essence of the original concept but in the format of a permanent exhibition park, consolidating itself as the largest of its kind in Portugal.
Sand City extends across an expansive area of approximately 5 hectares, entirely outdoors. Visitors walk along paths among the sculptures, observing the art under the Algarve sky.
The park incorporates green areas and rest areas, where visitors can take a break from their walk to calmly appreciate the sculptures and the surrounding environment. It is a space designed to provide a relaxing and inspiring visual experience.
When exploring Sand City, visitors will find paths where the main ground is composed of sand and gravel. This is the material that gives form to the sculptures and that lines the park's paths.
With families and animal lovers in mind, the park is pet-friendly, provided pets are kept on a leash at all times, ensuring tranquility for all present. There is also a dedicated area where visitors, freely and without supervision, can try their hand at sand sculpting, putting their own creativity to the test.
