Tonel Beach is located in Sagres, municipality of Vila do Bispo, and is situated on the coastline between Cape St. Vincent and Ponta de Sagres. It is nestled in a bay within the cliffs, facing west, which makes it a privileged spot for observing the sunset. To the east, the imposing Ponta de Sagres, with its walls, is a striking feature in the landscape. Access to the sandy area is via a ramp carved into the cliff. This beach is part of the protected area of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
The sandy stretch of Tonel Beach extends for about 400 meters and is located at the back of a small natural bay. Its size varies significantly with the tide; at low tide, there is plenty of space, but at high tide, the sand area decreases considerably. The sand is generally soft, although near the entrance, some stones and pebbles can be found. The landscape is dominated by the high cliffs that surround it. In the sea, a rocky islet stands out a short distance from the coast, capturing attention and taking on interesting shapes. It is important to note the presence of several submerged rocks, especially on the westernmost side of the beach.
The waters at Tonel Beach are typically cold, a common characteristic of this Atlantic coastal area. The sea here frequently presents strong swells and currents, so great caution is recommended when swimming, especially for those without much experience or for families with children. It is not the most suitable beach for those seeking calm waters, although there may be calmer days. During the bathing season, the beach has lifeguard surveillance. The sea conditions make it a very popular spot for surfing and bodyboarding enthusiasts. Waves vary with the seasons: they tend to be more accessible in summer, ideal for beginners, and larger and more powerful in autumn and winter, attracting more experienced surfers. It is also a potential spot for windsurfing, kiting, and diving.
Despite its proximity to Sagres, Tonel Beach conveys a sense of isolation and a wilder environment. It is known for being frequented mainly by surfers and tends to be less crowded than other more central beaches, offering a quieter and more natural atmosphere. The cliffs surrounding it, although imposing and beautiful, pose a risk of rockfalls, so it is essential to maintain a safe distance from their base. In addition to its natural beauty, Tonel Beach has a point of historical interest; it was on this sandy area that, in 1943, during World War II, a British seaplane crashed. The water quality and cleanliness of the beach are recognized by the Blue Flag.
