These ruins represent the vestiges of a very ancient fortified settlement. Located in an elevated position, the site was strategically important for those who inhabited it in remote times. It is a place that offers a window into the life and defenses of past communities.
The main occupation of this archaeological site dates back to the Iron Age. It constitutes an example of the "castros," fortified settlements that existed in this region. Although the Iron Age is the dominant period, signs of human presence have also been found in later periods.
Upon exploring the ruins, it is possible to observe the remains of the walls that protected the original settlement. The foundations of ancient dwellings and other structures can be identified. Visiting this place invites one to imagine what daily life was like for the people who lived here centuries ago.
One of the highlights of the visit is the panoramic view from the elevated position where the ruins are located. The choice of this location for the settlement was largely due to its ability to offer extensive visual control over the surrounding area, fundamental for surveillance and defense.
The Castro de Alferce site is considered an important point for understanding human occupation in the Algarve, particularly during the Iron Age. It is recognized for its historical and heritage value, being classified as a Site of Public Interest.
