Rocha Negra rises on the Algarve coast, in São Gonçalo de Lagos, an area within the town of Lagos. This remarkable rock formation is located on the eastern part of Praia da Luz, serving as a prominent feature of the coastal landscape in this area. Its unique presence stands out along the coast, easily visible from the surrounding area.
Rocha Negra is a fascinating testament to the geological history of the Algarve. Dating back more than 70 million years, it represents the remains of intense volcanic activity that shaped part of the Portuguese surface. This formation corresponds to an ancient volcano chimney, now extinct, resulting from a solidified lava intrusion. Its volcanic origin gives it a dark color and a distinct texture.
Unlike most of the Algarve coastline, Rocha Negra presents itself as a black granite crag that abruptly stands out from the region's usual sandstone cliffs. Its imposing and atypical silhouette, which projects over the sea, makes it one of the most characteristic visual points of the Lagos coastline. From nearby coastal paths, it is possible to appreciate the dimension and uniqueness of this formation, which offers a distinct perspective on the coastal landscape.
