Furnas Beach is located in an isolated valley, framed by high cliffs displaying characteristic regional vegetation. Situated in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, near Budens, this beach is part of the natural context of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
Furnas Beach owes its name to the remarkable geological formations present in the surrounding cliffs. These are natural cavities or caves, known as "furnas", which have been carved by the continuous action of marine erosion and wind on the limestone cliffs of the coast.
The natural cavities that give the beach its name are one of its most distinctive features. Located primarily on the eastern side of the cliffs, these rock formations offer natural shade from the sun on hotter days. They are a sought-after feature by visitors, so they may be occupied.
The modest-sized sandy area of Furnas Beach stretches through a tranquil valley. Next to the beach, there is a stream bed, which is usually dry. Rock formations are present in the surroundings, especially on the western side.
The overall atmosphere of the beach is one of great serenity and contact with nature. It is a place that maintains a wilder and more secluded character, generally frequented by those seeking refuge away from busier areas. It is also known as a popular spot for naturists.
It is important to note that Furnas Beach maintains its natural state and does not have any support facilities or surveillance. Visitors should bring essential items such as water and food, and ensure they take all their trash with them when leaving, contributing to the preservation of the site.
There is no lifeguard at this beach, so caution is recommended when swimming in the sea. Additionally, due to the natural instability of the cliffs in some areas, it is advisable to maintain a safe distance from the base of the cliffs to avoid risks.
The configuration of the sandy area varies significantly with the tides. At high tide, the sand strip becomes smaller, with the water approaching the cliffs and the 'furnas'. During low tide, the available space increases, allowing even for the exploration of small coves to the east over the rocks.
