The Quinta do Lago South golf course is located within the Quinta do Lago urbanization, a well-known area in the locality of Almancil, which belongs to the municipality of Loulé. This privileged location in the Algarve is characterized by a rich natural environment. Its position offers views over the Quinta do Lago lagoon and remarkable proximity to the landscape of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, which serves as a backdrop to many of its fairways.
Opened in 1974, the Quinta do Lago South golf course was designed by William Mitchell. Since its opening, this course has solidified its reputation, having been the venue for the prestigious Portuguese Open in several editions, between 1976 and 2001. Its history as host to important professional and amateur competitions has contributed to the course frequently being considered a favourite by many golfers.
The eighteen-hole course, a par 72, spans approximately 6500 meters. It is known for its challenging nature, featuring fairways that can be narrow and large greens. Strategy is essential, given the variety of doglegs and the water and sand hazards found in key positions along the holes. The design also includes subtle elevations and undulating fairways, which add complexity and interest to the game.
The course is integrated into a distinctive natural setting of the Algarve. It is bordered by an extensive area of stone pines and various species of wild vegetation. Along the course, the presence of several lakes not only enriches the landscape but also becomes strategic elements of the game. This environment is complemented by views over the Ria Formosa Natural Park, one of the region's natural gems, which provides a unique backdrop for playing golf.
