Located to the east of the village of Armação de Pêra, in the municipality of Silves, this is the westernmost portion of a very extensive beach. Its western boundary is defined by the mouth of the Ribeira de Alcantarilha, also known as a salt marsh. The sandy area is vast and, at the rear, is flanked by an extensive dune system. Access to the sand is via pedestrian paths that cross the dunes, integrating the beach into the surrounding natural landscape.
Praia Grande de Pêra (West) stands out for its vast sandy area, which stretches for a considerable distance, providing a sense of space and freedom. This characteristic, combined with its slightly remote position from the busier center of Armação de Pêra, gives it a more tranquil atmosphere. It is a place where one can enjoy the breadth of the coast without the density of visitors sometimes seen on more urban beaches.
One of the most striking elements of this beach's landscape is its impressive dune system, which can reach about 300 meters in width. These dunes are important for coastal stabilization and create a natural barrier between the sandy area and the more inland zone, contributing to environmental preservation. The presence of the Ribeira de Alcantarilha salt marsh to the west complements the surrounding natural setting, marking the physical boundary of this section of the beach.
The waters that bathe Praia Grande de Pêra (West) are generally calm and clear, making it pleasant for sea bathing, especially during the bathing season. Water quality is regularly monitored and recognized by competent authorities, which has earned it awards. During the summer, the presence of lifeguards ensures greater safety for bathers. The beach also offers facilitated access for people with reduced mobility on its western side.
