Praia dos Três Castelos is located on the urban waterfront of Portimão. Situated to the west of the bustling Praia da Rocha, it is flanked by a tall and distinctive cliff. Access to the sandy area is via staircases descending the cliff, one of which is near the viewpoint at the top, allowing for a perspective of the location before descending. The surrounding area is urban.
The landscape of Praia dos Três Castelos is strongly marked by its rock formations. The beach's name is inspired by three large rocks that emerge from the sea, close to the bathing area. On the sandy area and along the base of the cliff, numerous boulders sculpted by erosion can also be found. These formations create arches and small natural cavities, inviting exploration.
The sandy area of Praia dos Três Castelos is vast, especially in the central and eastern parts, and has an inviting golden hue. The sand is clean and offers plenty of space. The waters are typically clear and calm, making it suitable for swimming. At low tide, small natural pools appear among the boulders on the sandy area, places of interest for those exploring the coast.
The cliffs that delimit the beach to the north and east feature warm tones and are the habitat for coastal-adapted vegetation, such as mastic trees and saltwort. These cliffs also serve as a refuge and observation point for various coastal birds, such as seagulls and swifts. At the top of the cliff, there is a viewpoint and a paved path that provides wide and interesting perspectives over the sandy area, the rock formations, and the coastline, serving as a landscape observation point.
