Fishermen's Beach (Praia dos Pescadores) is located right in the centre of Albufeira, integrated into the urban area next to the neighbourhood of the same name. It is situated at the eastern end of an extensive sandy beach that stretches along the city's waterfront.

This beach is set against a backdrop of low cliffs where the white houses of Albufeira's oldest part rise. The beach is accessible from an urban square directly behind the sand, which connects the lower area to the upper part of the city via an outdoor escalator. From the top, one can reach a viewpoint offering a comprehensive vista over the beach and the historic centre.

Origin of the Name and History

The name "Praia dos Pescadores" (Fishermen's Beach) refers to its past. This was, formerly, the main operational area for the local fishing community. It was here that fishing boats were launched and retrieved, and where fishermen carried out their tasks directly on the sand.

With the construction of Albufeira Marina, fishing activity became concentrated in this new port. Although boats and daily fishing life no longer mark the beach as they once did, the name remains, as a memory of the strong connection that existed between this place and the work of the fishermen.

Natural Characteristics and Environment

Praia dos Pescadores features a golden, fine sandy beach. It is a beach with waters considered of good and clean quality, distinguished with a Blue Flag. The sea waters can be cool, even during the warmest months.

The seabed tends to deepen relatively quickly near the waterline, and the swell can vary throughout the day. To facilitate movement across the sand, especially on hotter days, there are wooden walkways laid out on the beach.

Centrality and Dynamism

Being an urban and easily accessible beach, Praia dos Pescadores is one of the most frequented places in Albufeira, particularly during the summer season. Its centrality and ample sandy space make it suitable for accommodating many people simultaneously.

Immediately behind the beach, there is a large square that functions as a central space in the city's life. This area, together with the beach, is frequently the setting for outdoor events and celebrations, standing out as a meeting point for New Year's Eve, with shows and fireworks.
